How the HRA calculator works
House rent allowance is a percentage of basic pay, and the percentage depends on the class of the city where you work. While DA is above 50%, the rates are:
| City class | HRA rate | Minimum HRA (Rs) |
|---|---|---|
| X class | 30% of basic pay | 5,400 |
| Y class | 20% of basic pay | 3,600 |
| Z class | 10% of basic pay | 1,800 |
HRA is calculated on basic pay only, not on DA. X class cities include Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Y class covers cities with more than 5 lakh population, and Z class is everywhere else. Your office can tell you the class of your posting.
