Eligibility Criteria
| Criterion | Detail |
|---|---|
| Educational Qualification | A Ph.D. in any life science or related subject (such as Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Computational Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Agricultural Sciences or Plant Sciences). A Ph.D. in Chemical, Biomedical or Pharmaceutical Engineering or Technology also counts. So does an M.D. in any branch of medicine, an MDS or an MVSc. It must be from a recognised university or institute. |
| Experience — Scientist-E | At least 5 years after your qualification, in a responsible higher position at a research or teaching institute, university or industry. You need published research of the highest standard and/or technologies of proven use. |
| Experience — Scientist-D | The same kind of experience, but at least 3 years. |
| Age Limit | See the age table below. Age is counted as on 20.11.2026, using the date of birth on your Class 10 (matriculation) certificate. Check your age eligibility → |
| Deputation | Scientists of Central or State Government, universities, PSUs or government-funded research bodies can apply. They need the same qualification and either an equal post held on a regular basis in their own cadre, or 5 years of regular service in Level 12 (for Scientist-E) or Level 11 (for Scientist-D). The age limit is 56 years for all. |
| Nationality | Indian nationals only |
| Experience that counts | Only qualifications and experience that relate to inStem’s research are counted. |
| Desirable, not compulsory | Postdoctoral experience with a strong list of publications; work in human developmental biology, reproductive endocrinology, stem cell disease models or regenerative therapies; success in winning research funding; skills such as CRISPR, organoid culture, single-cell omics, bioengineering or computational methods. |
| Not eligible | Anyone dismissed or compulsorily retired from government service, or convicted for an offence involving moral turpitude. |
Age Limit by Post
| Post Code | Post and Category | Maximum Age |
|---|---|---|
| 14/26 | Scientist-E, OBC(NCL) | 45 + 3 years = 48 years |
| 15/26 | Scientist-E, ST | 45 + 5 years = 50 years |
| 16/26 | Scientist-D, UR | 40 years |
| 17/26 | Scientist-D, ST | 40 + 5 years = 45 years |
| Deputation | All posts | 56 years |
The notice already adds the category relaxation to each limit. So an OBC(NCL) candidate aged 47 can still apply for the Scientist-E post, because the limit for that post is 48.
Who Should Apply
- This is a senior faculty job, not an entry-level one. You need a Ph.D. (or an M.D., MDS or MVSc) and then 3 years of work for Scientist-D, or 5 years for Scientist-E.
- Each of the four posts is kept for one category (OBC(NCL), ST, UR, ST), so check the Category column before you choose a post. If you apply for more than one post, only your last application is counted.
- Your research has to fit CReATE. The qualification list is wide, but only experience that relates to inStem’s research is counted. Questions about research fit go to head_create@instem.res.in.
- There is no written exam. Your CV, research plan and cover letter get you shortlisted, and then you give a seminar and attend an interview. Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee that you are called.
- If you work for the government or a PSU, you must show an NOC (No Objection Certificate, a letter from your employer allowing you to take part) at the interview. Without it you are not allowed to appear.
Selection Process
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| 1. Shortlisting | The institute shortlists candidates from the CV, research plan and cover letter you upload. Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee a call. |
| 2. Seminar | Shortlisted candidates give a seminar. The date and venue are not announced yet. |
| 3. Interaction and interview | Shortlisted candidates also have an interaction and an interview. The notice does not give marks, weightage or timings for any stage. |
| 4. Appointment | Selected candidates must be medically fit, and their character, antecedents and caste are verified. Probation (the trial period) is 2 years. You bring originals of your documents when called. |
In short: there is no written exam. The first cut is made from your CV and research plan, so those two documents matter most.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not apply twice for one post by accident. If you send several applications, only the last one is counted.
- Do not forget the photograph and signature. The notice says an application without them is not valid.
- Use an OBC(NCL) certificate issued on or after 01.04.2026 in the DoPT format. An older certificate may not be accepted.
- Check your category and details before you submit, because they cannot be changed afterwards.
- Count only experience that relates to inStem’s research. Other work may not be counted towards the 3 or 5 years.
- Keep your NOC ready if you work for the government or a PSU, since you cannot appear at the interview without it.
