The Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) is taking on 21 Head Constable (Motor Mechanic) recruits this year, and this one is only for men. If you have a Motor Mechanic ITI certificate with three years of workshop experience, or a three-year Diploma in Automobile Engineering, you can apply online until 27.10.2026. The written exam counts for 60 of its 100 marks on trade theory alone, so your workshop knowledge is what decides this job.

Eligibility Criteria
| Criterion | Detail |
|---|---|
| Educational Qualification | 10+2 pass from a recognised Board or Institution, and either a Motor Mechanic certificate from a recognised Institution or ITI with 3 years of practical experience in the trade at a reputed workshop, or a 3-year Diploma in Automobile Engineering |
| Age Limit | 18 to 25 years as on 27.10.2026. Your date of birth must not be earlier than 28.10.2001 and not later than 27.10.2008 Check your age eligibility → |
| Age proof | Only the date of birth on your Matriculation (10th class) certificate is accepted. No change is allowed later |
| Gender | Male candidates only |
| Nationality | Indian citizens, including subjects of Nepal or Bhutan |
| Height | 170 cm for most states. 165 cm for Garhwalis, Kumaonis, Gorkhas, Dogras, Marathas and candidates from Assam, Himachal Pradesh, the Kashmir region of J and K, and Ladakh. 162.5 cm for the North-Eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura |
| Chest | 80 cm unexpanded and 85 cm expanded for most states. 78 and 83 cm for the second group above. 77 and 82 cm for the North-Eastern states |
| Weight | Proportionate to height and age, as per the medical guidelines issued by ADG (Medical), CAPFs |
| Eyesight | 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse eye without glasses. Glasses or any other correction are not allowed. Colour blind candidates are not eligible |
| Physical defects | You must not have knock knees, flat foot, varicose veins or a squint. Candidates with physical deformities or disabilities cannot apply for this examination |
| Service bond | You must serve at least 10 years. Resigning earlier means refunding three months pay and allowances, or the cost of your training, whichever is higher |
| Application Restriction | Online applications only. Once you submit, your category cannot be changed later |
Age Relaxation
| Category | Relaxation beyond the upper age limit |
|---|---|
| SC | 5 years |
| OBC (NCL) | 3 years |
| Ex-servicemen (General / UR) | 3 years, after subtracting the length of military service from your actual age |
| Ex-servicemen (OBC) | 6 years (3 plus 3), after subtracting military service from your actual age |
| Ex-servicemen (SC) | 8 years (3 plus 5), after subtracting military service from your actual age |
| Government Servant (UR) | Up to 40 years |
| Government Servant (OBC NCL) | Up to 43 years |
| Government Servant (SC / ST) | Up to 45 years |
So a 27-year-old OBC (NCL) candidate is out of the running, because three extra years only take the limit to 28 and the notification counts your age on 27.10.2026. OBC (NCL) means Non-Creamy Layer — you need a certificate proving your family income stayed under the limit across 2025-26, 2024-25 and 2023-24, and you must already hold it before the closing date.
Selection Process
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| 1. Physical Efficiency Test (PET) — Phase I | Three events: a 1.6 km race in 7 minutes 30 seconds, a long jump of 11 feet (3 chances), and a high jump of 3½ feet (3 chances). No marks are given — the PET is qualifying, meaning you only have to pass it. Fail any one event and you are out at this stage. There is no appeal against the PET result. Ex-servicemen do not have to do the PET at all, but they must still clear the PST, documentation, written exam, skill test and medical. |
| 2. Physical Standard Test (PST) — Phase I | Height, chest and weight are measured against the standards in the Eligibility table above. If you are rejected on height or chest you get a rejection slip on the spot, and you may appeal in writing to the Presiding Officer the same day for a re-measurement. His decision is final. Being underweight or overweight does not stop you here — that is decided at the medical stage instead. |
| 3. Verification of Original Documents — Phase II | Everyone who clears the PST brings their original certificates for checking. Originals are handed back on the spot and self-attested copies are kept. Fail to produce a required certificate and you are eliminated with a rejection slip. Note that this happens before the written exam, so confirm your eligibility properly before applying. |
| 4. Written Examination (100 marks) — Phase II | Two hours, objective multiple-choice questions at 12th standard level. General Knowledge 10 questions for 10 marks, Mathematics 10 questions for 10 marks, Hindi or English 20 questions for 20 marks (20 questions are set in each language and you pick one), and Trade related theory 60 questions for 60 marks. ITBP will decide whether it is a Computer Based Test or an OMR paper. Minimum qualifying marks are 35% for General, EWS and Ex-servicemen, and 33% for SC and OBC (NCL). No re-evaluation and no re-conduct. |
| 5. Practical (Skill) Test (50 marks) — Phase III | Candidates are called in order of written marks, up to ten times the number of vacancies in each category. Vehicle inspection 10 marks, identification of faults 10 marks, rectification of defects 25 marks, and handling of tools 5 marks. You need 50% to pass, and the test is qualifying only. |
| 6. Merit List — Phase III | A separate merit list is drawn for each category — General (UR), SC, OBC (NCL), EWS and Ex-servicemen — using the marks you scored in the written examination. There is no reserve list. If two candidates tie, the older one is placed higher, and if they still tie, alphabetical order by English name decides it. |
| 7. Detailed Medical Examination (DME) — Phase IV | Candidates shortlisted on merit go for a full medical check, done under the CAPF medical guidelines. You are declared either FIT or UNFIT. There is no “temporary unfit” verdict. |
| 8. Review Medical Examination (RME) — Phase IV | If you are declared UNFIT in the DME, you can ask for a review by signing a written consent within 24 hours of being told. The RME is usually held the next day. The Review Medical Board’s decision is final and there is no second appeal. |
In short: your final rank comes only from the written exam. The PET, PST and skill test are all pass-or-fail, so scoring high in the skill test earns you nothing extra — but failing any one of them removes you from the process entirely, with no chance to appear in the later stages.
Salary and Benefits
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| Pay Level | Level 4 in the Pay Matrix, as per the 7th Central Pay Commission |
| Pay Band | Rs 25,500 to Rs 81,100 per month |
| Dearness Allowance | Payable as admissible in the Force from time to time |
| House Rent Allowance | Free accommodation, or HRA if no quarter is provided |
| Ration Money Allowance | Payable as admissible |
| Special Compensatory Allowance | Paid while posted in specified border areas |
| Transport Allowance | Payable as admissible |
| Leave Travel Concession | Available as per Force rules |
| Medical | Free medical facilities |
| Pension | You choose between the New Defined Contribution Pension Scheme (NPS), in force since 01.01.2004, and the United Pension Scheme (UPS), in force since 01.04.2024 |
In plain terms, you start at Rs 25,500 a month as basic pay, and the figure that reaches your hand is meaningfully higher once DA, ration money and either free quarters or HRA are added. Rs 81,100 is the top of the band after many years of service, not a starting figure.
How to Apply
- Go to the ITBP recruitment website at recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in and register a profile if you do not already have one.
- Fill in your gender, category (UR, SC, OBC NCL or EWS), employment status and riots-affected status in your profile before you start the application form — these details cannot be changed later.
- Read the instructions, then fill the online application form carefully. Give an email address and mobile number that actually work, because your admit card comes through this website and ITBP is not responsible if you miss it.
- Upload your photograph and signature in the format the form asks for, and pay Rs 100 through the online payment gateway. SC candidates and Ex-servicemen pay nothing.
- Submit the form before 11:59 PM on 27.10.2026 and save a printout — you must carry a clear printout of the application form and admit card to the PET and PST, or you will not be allowed in.
Note: Offline and postal applications are not accepted and will be rejected outright. Fee paid by any mode other than the online gateway is not accepted either, and that money is forfeited.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not pick the wrong category when you register — ITBP will not change it later, and a wrong entry gets your candidature cancelled.
- Get your SC, OBC (NCL) or EWS certificate issued before 27.10.2026, because a certificate dated after the closing date is not accepted and you will be treated as General.
- Use only the Annexure formats printed in the notification for your caste, OBC, EWS and NOC certificates — a certificate on any other format is rejected at documentation.
- Pay the fee only through the online gateway on the ITBP site. Any other route means rejection, and the money is gone.
- If you already work in a government office or a PSU, arrange the No Objection Certificate early — turning up at documentation without it ends your candidature on the spot.
- Carry a clear printout of your application form and admit card to the PET and PST. Candidates without one are not allowed into the venue.
- Leave your mobile phone outside the exam hall. Having one on you counts as unfair means whether it is switched on or off.
- Nobody in ITBP takes money for a job. If someone asks you for a payment or a favour, report it to the recruitment board or the local police.
