Selection Process
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| Stage-I: Online exam | A CBE (computer based exam), meaning a test taken on a computer. It has 100 multiple-choice questions of 1 mark each, in Hindi and English, and lasts 1 hour. There is no negative marking. Passing marks are 40 for UR, EWS and OBC, and 35 for SC and ST. If the exam runs in several shifts, marks are normalised (adjusted so that every shift is fair). Your identity and left-thumb fingerprint are checked before the exam, and your result appears on your dashboard on the portal. |
| Stage-II: Recruitment centre tests | Held for 1 to 2 days at a Coast Guard recruitment centre, for candidates shortlisted from Stage-I. Before it, you upload extra documents and pick your date and centre (first come, first served). On the day you go through: identity and fingerprint check, the Physical Fitness Test, the Assessment and Adaptability Test (online or OMR), document verification and the recruitment medical. All of these are qualifying only, meaning pass or fail. If you are declared medically unfit, you can appeal at a designated military hospital, and that appeal decision is final. |
| Stage-III: INS Chilka | Held for 1 to 2 days at INS Chilka for candidates who clear Stages I and II and stand in merit as per vacancies. It includes an Aadhaar-based identity check, document verification, the pre-enrolment medical (an appeal, if needed, must be finished within 5 working days) and submission of original documents and the police verification form. It is held separately for each post and batch, and you travel there at your own expense. |
| Stage-IV: Document authentication | Your original educational and other documents are checked with the boards, universities and state authorities. If a document is reported as not genuine, you are removed from service. |
| Final merit list | Navik (General Duty) men: zone-wise and category-wise list. Navik (General Duty) women, Yantrik, Navik (Domestic Branch) and Hygienist-I: all-India, category-wise list. Your rank depends only on your Stage-I marks, provided you qualify every part of Stage-II, and on the vacancies. If marks are tied, the older candidate ranks higher, and then the one with more marks in the Assessment Test. Navik (General Duty) candidates can land in either batch, so you cannot claim a particular batch. |
In short: your marks in the online exam decide your rank. The fitness test, assessment test, document check and medical only decide whether you move ahead, and their marks do not count towards merit.
Physical Fitness Test (Stage-II)
| Candidate | 1.6 km run | Squats (Uthak-Baithak) | Push-ups | Bent-knee sit-ups |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Male | 6 min 30 sec | 20 | 15 | 15 |
| Female | 8 min | 15 | 10 | 10 |
All four tests are done one after the other without a break. Any break counts as a fail. You take the test at your own risk, so bring sports shoes, a T-shirt and trousers.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Enter the marks of every subject exactly as printed on your marksheet. Wrong or incomplete marks can get your candidature cancelled.
- Apply for one post only. If you submit two forms, only the latest one counts, and the fee for the extra form is not refunded.
- Write down the email ID and mobile number you register with. The portal shows them only in hidden form later, and the Coast Guard will not retrieve them for you.
- Choose your category carefully. Your category, date of birth and gender cannot be changed after you submit, and a wrong category claim can cancel your candidature even after you join.
- Upload clear and complete scans. Blurred photos or signatures, and partly scanned documents, get rejected.
- Keep your thumbs clean on exam day. If mehndi or wax stops the fingerprint machine from reading your thumb, you will not be allowed to sit the exam.
