Age relaxation (extra years allowed over the maximum age) for each category:
| Category | Relaxation |
|---|---|
| UR / EWS | Nil |
| OBC (NCL) | 3 years |
| SC / ST | 5 years |
| PwBD – UR / EWS | 10 years |
| PwBD – OBC (NCL) | 10 + 3 years |
| PwBD – SC / ST | 10 + 5 years |
| Ex-Servicemen | Length of military service + 3 years, as per rules |
| Regular Central / State Govt, Semi-Govt, PSU and autonomous body employees (all categories) | 5 years |

| Jammu and Kashmir domicile 01.01.1980 to 31.12.1989 – SC / ST | 5 + 5 years |
| IREL internal candidates | 10 years |
| Overall cap | Age after all relaxations cannot be more than 50 years |
So an OBC (NCL) candidate can be up to 38 years old on 09.11.2026 and an SC / ST candidate up to 40, but nobody can be over 50 after every relaxation is added.
Who Should Apply
- This is a one-year training job first. You join as a trainee on Rs 34,200 a month, and the notice says trainees “may be absorbed” as Tradesmen after the year, so absorption is not promised in writing.
- You must pick one unit and one trade while applying and cannot change them later. The job is transferable, so the notice says only people willing to work anywhere in India should apply.
- Two years of trade experience is a must on top of the ITI or NAC. Apprenticeship counts, so a fresh ITI pass with no apprenticeship or work does not meet the rule.
- Your rank comes only from the Computer Based Test. The skill test is pass or fail, so spend your preparation time on the 150-question written paper.
- The notice says no post is suitable for PwBD candidates (persons with benchmark disabilities), even though it lists age relaxation for them.
Selection Process
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| Stage 1: Computer Based Test (CBT) | A test on a computer: 2 hours, one sitting, 150 multiple-choice questions, in Hindi and English |
| Section I | 100 questions on professional knowledge of your trade |
| Section II | 50 questions on general knowledge, logical reasoning, numerical ability and English |
| Marking | 1 mark per right answer; no negative marking, so wrong answers do not cut marks |
| Qualifying marks | UR / EWS: 50% in each section. SC / ST / OBC (NCL): 45% in each section |
| Stage 2: Skill Test | Trade Test or Computer Proficiency Test, only for CBT qualifiers, 5 candidates per post (1:5) in merit order |
| Nature of skill test | Qualifying only: if you fail it you are out, whatever your CBT score |
| Travel cost | 2nd class sleeper rail fare is paid for the skill test; nothing is paid for the CBT |
| Stage 3: Final merit list | Made only from CBT marks, trade-wise and category-wise for each unit |
| Stage 4: Checks | Document verification, medical examination, and character and antecedents verification |
| Wait-list | Trade-wise and category-wise for each unit, valid for one year |
In short: the written test on the computer decides your rank. The skill test is only a pass-or-fail gate, and the marks you get in it do not change your rank.
Exam Centres
The CBT is planned at these cities. You choose two centres in order of preference while applying, and IREL can still change the centre it gives you.
| State | Exam centres |
|---|---|
| Maharashtra | Mumbai, Nagpur |
| Odisha | Bhubaneswar, Berhampur |
| Kerala | Trivandrum, Kochi |
| Madhya Pradesh | Bhopal, Indore |
| Tamil Nadu | Chennai, Nagercoil |
| Andhra Pradesh | Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada |

| Component | Detail |

| HRA during training | Paid at local rates if company bachelor accommodation is not given, on Rs 22,000 |
