Selection Process
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| 1. Part-I (Objective Type) | 100 multiple-choice questions of 1 mark each, so 100 marks: English 30, General Studies 40 and Arithmetic 30. Time: 1 hour 30 minutes. Each wrong answer costs 0.25 mark (negative marking). Held first, tentatively in December 2026 or thereabout. Only a limited number of candidates who score the qualifying marks go on to Part-II. |
| 2. Part-II (Conventional Type – Written) | Conventional means you write your own answers instead of picking options. 100 marks: Group-A English 50 and Group-B Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali 50. The notification gives the time as 1 hour. Date to be notified later. Writing your name, roll number or any mark that shows who you are costs you 10% of the full marks of that paper. |
| 3. Computer and Typing Test | Basic computer operation and typing speed are checked only for candidates who have qualified in both Part-I and Part-II. Typing speed needed: 20 words a minute in English or 10 in Bengali. |
| 4. Final Merit List | Made from your total marks in Part-I and Part-II together, as long as you also pass the computer and typing test. A candidate who qualifies for Part-II but skips it is left out of the merit list. |
| Tie-breaking | If marks are equal: first, higher aggregate marks in English and Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali; then higher marks in English; then the older candidate. |
| Posting Choice | You must give your choices in order of preference: (a) Secretariat Departments, (b) Directorates, (c) Regional Offices, including district offices of one particular district, or Kolkata. Filling this in is compulsory. |
| Before Joining | Selected candidates face a medical board and police verification of their background. |
In short: you write the objective test first. Only some of those who pass it get to the written test. Typing and computer skills are checked last, and your final rank comes from the Part-I and Part-II marks added together.
Qualifying Marks
| Category | Minimum Aggregate Marks |
|---|---|
| UR (General) | 40% |

| SC | 35% |
| ST | 30% |
| PwBD | 30% |

These are the minimum aggregate marks, counting Part-I and Part-II together. The commission can lower them further if many reserved posts stay unfilled.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not send two applications. Applying more than once can get all of them cancelled.
- Pick your typing option (English or Bengali) in the form itself. The notification says it has to be chosen when you apply.
- Be sure of your category before you submit. No one can change or claim SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwBD, sports or Ex-Servicemen status afterwards.
- Use the age on your Madhyamik or equivalent certificate. Any other proof of age is not accepted.
- The notice says documents are to be uploaded in the edit window, and also that the category certificate PDF is needed or the application is not accepted. Keep your PDFs ready for both times.
- The edit window can be used only once, so check your printout properly before you use it.
- Leave your mobile phone, smart watch and Bluetooth devices outside. They are banned at the exam venue and you can be banned from future exams.
