Soils and Crops of India — Static GK Capsule

Soils and crops is a chapter most candidates try to brute-force: eight soil names, a dozen crops, and a pile of state lists. It is the wrong way round. Indian soils follow two things — the rock underneath and the rainfall above — and once you know those, most of the table writes itself. This capsule teaches that logic first and then gives you the lists, for SSC CGL and CHSL, RRB NTPC and Group D, State PSC, UPSC Prelims and agriculture-related recruitment.

The Two Sentences That Explain Almost Everything

Soil is not random. It is what is left when rock is broken down over a very long time by weather. So the type of soil in a place depends mainly on two things:

1. What rock is underneath. 2. How much rain falls on it.

And then crops follow the soil the same way: a crop grows where the soil holds the right amount of water for it and the temperature suits it. That is the whole chapter in two lines.

Work through one example and you will see how much it saves. The Deccan Plateau is made of basalt, hardened lava from ancient volcanic eruptions. Basalt weathers into a dark, clay-rich soil that holds water tightly. A crop that needs steady moisture through a long growing season, in a region without heavy rain, will therefore do well there — and that crop is cotton. You have just derived “black cotton soil of the Deccan” instead of memorising it.

Run it the other way for the Western Ghats. Very heavy rain falls on the slopes, and heavy rain washes the nutrients downward out of reach of roots — a process called leaching. What is left behind is iron and aluminium, which is poor soil for grain but perfectly workable for deep-rooted plantation crops. Hence tea, coffee, rubber and cashew, not wheat.

The Eight Soils of India

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) classifies Indian soils into eight major types. Learn this table as the spine of the chapter.

Alluvial Soil: Khadar and Bhangar

Within alluvial soil there is one distinction that is asked almost every year, and it is easy once you picture a riverbank.

  • Khadar — the new alluvium, on the lower land close to the river. It is flooded most years, so fresh silt is added and it stays more fertile.
  • Bhangar — the old alluvium, on higher ground away from the river. It is not renewed by floods, is darker and often contains lime nodules called kankar.

Memory hook: Khadar is new and near; Bhangar is the bygone bank. If a question asks which is more fertile, the answer is the one the river still reaches — Khadar.

Black Soil: Why It Suits Cotton

  • It is a clay soil, and clay particles hold water rather than letting it drain away. Cotton needs a long growing season with steady moisture, which is exactly what this soil provides in a region of moderate rain.
  • It is self-ploughing. In the dry season it shrinks and develops deep cracks; in the rains it swells and closes them. The cracking turns the soil over on its own, which is why it stays productive with little mechanical ploughing. “Self-ploughing” is a one-word answer examiners like.
  • Its colour comes from iron compounds and organic matter in the parent lava — not, as is sometimes claimed, from a high humus content.

The Three Crop Seasons

The link back to the main idea: Kharif crops are the ones that drink the monsoon, so they are sown as it arrives. Rabi crops are grown in the dry cool months and therefore depend on irrigation and residual soil moisture rather than rain. Kharif is the monsoon crop; Rabi is the winter crop; Zaid is the summer gap-filler.

What Each Major Crop Needs

Notice the pattern rather than the rows: the more rain a crop needs, the further east and the further up the hills it is grown. Rice and jute in the wet east, wheat in the drier north-west, millets in the driest interiors, plantation crops on the wet slopes.

Soil Erosion and Conservation

  • Sheet erosion — water removes a thin, even layer of topsoil across a slope. Slow, and easy to miss until fertility has already fallen.
  • Gully erosion — running water cuts deep channels. Where these spread, the land becomes unfit for farming and is called badland; in the Chambal basin such areas are known as ravines.
  • Wind erosion — loose dry soil is blown away, the main problem in arid western India.
  • Contour ploughing — ploughing across a slope rather than up and down it, so each furrow acts as a small barrier to running water.
  • Terrace farming — cutting steps into a hillside, standard in the Himalayas and the Western Ghats.
  • Shelter belts — rows of trees planted across the wind’s path, used in western Rajasthan. They also helped stabilise sand dunes.
  • Strip cropping — alternating strips of crops so that bare soil is never exposed in a continuous stretch.

One-Line Facts That Keep Coming Back

  • Alluvial soil is the most widespread soil in India and supports the largest share of the population. The exact percentage varies by source; the ranking is what gets asked.
  • Regur is black soil. A one-word question that appears constantly.
  • Laterite takes its name from the Latin later, meaning brick — it hardens on exposure to air and has long been cut into building blocks.
  • Red soil is red because of iron oxide, not because of any nutrient.
  • Saline and alkaline soils are largely man-made, caused by irrigating without draining.
  • Kuttanad in Kerala is the classic peaty-soil region, and farming there happens below sea level.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming black soil is black because it is rich in humus. It is not — the colour comes from iron compounds in the parent lava. Black soil is in fact poor in organic matter.
  • Confusing red soil with laterite. Red soil forms in areas of low rainfall; laterite forms under heavy rainfall. Opposite causes, and both are reddish.
  • Mixing up Khadar and Bhangar. New and near the river is Khadar.
  • Treating state-wise production rankings as fixed. The leading producer of a crop can change from year to year — learn the soil-and-climate logic, which does not change, and check the current year’s figures separately.
  • Quoting one exact area percentage for alluvial soil. Sources give figures between about 40 and 46 per cent. Say “the most widespread” unless the question demands a number.
  • Saying tea needs heavy standing water. Tea needs heavy rainfall but well-drained slopes — standing water destroys the roots.
