Five Stories Worth Understanding, Not Just Memorising

1. The SCO chair passes to Pakistan. The rotating chairmanship is largely administrative — the chair hosts the next summit and sets the agenda’s emphasis — but it is the detail examiners pick, because it changes every year. Remember the pair: Kyrgyzstan handed over at Bishkek; Pakistan holds it for 2026-27. The SCO works by consensus, so the chair steers rather than decides.

2. Why 7.8% is a real number, not a headline. Quarterly GDP growth is measured against the same quarter a year earlier, so 7.8% in Q1 FY27 is being compared with Q1 FY26’s 6.9%. It beat the RBI’s own 7% projection, which is why it moved forecasts — SBI Research lifted its full-year FY27 call to 7.3% within days. When a question asks “which body released” the figure, the answer is the NSO, under MoSPI.

3. What is special about EOS-05. Most Earth-observation satellites sit in low Earth orbit and sweep past a place twice a day. A satellite in geosynchronous orbit stays over roughly the same longitude, so it can watch one region continuously — valuable for tracking cyclones, floods and border areas in near real time. That continuous view is the “first” in “India’s first imaging satellite from geosynchronous orbit,” and it is what makes GSLV-F17 more than a routine launch.

4. The IST rule is about law, not clocks. India already ran on IST. What changed is that legal metrology rules now make it the single reference for legal, administrative and commercial purposes — so contracts, official records and timestamps have one defensible standard instead of relying on convention. Expect it as a one-liner: which ministry / department notified it — the answer is the Department of Consumer Affairs.

5. A sports week that will be asked for years. Messi’s international retirement, the FIH Hockey World Cup double and India winning the hosting rights to the first Women’s Champions Trophy are the sort of facts that stay in Static GK long after the news cycle. Fix the details now: Messi retires as a 2022 champion and 2026 runner-up; Germany took the men’s hockey title and Argentina the women’s; the Women’s Champions Trophy runs 14–28 February 2027 in Mumbai and Vadodara.
