| Post | UR / EWS | OBC(NCL) | SC / ST |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assistant Superintendent (Hindi Translator) – post reserved for OBC(NCL) | Not applicable | 36 years | Not applicable |
| Posts 2 to 19 (Junior Supervisor to Painter) | 33 years | 36 years | 38 years |
| Steward cum Cook | 41 years | 44 years | 46 years |
| Category | Age relaxation |
|---|---|
| OBC(NCL) | 3 years over the UR/EWS limit. You need an NCL certificate — proof that your OBC family is in the non-creamy layer. It must be no more than 6 months old when you join. |
| SC / ST | 5 years over the UR/EWS limit |
| Ex-Servicemen / Ex-Agniveer | As per Government of India rules |
| PwBD | As per Government of India rules |
| Internal candidates | As per GSL rules |
| Overall cap | After all relaxations, your age on 30.09.2026 cannot be more than 56 years |
So an OBC (non-creamy layer) candidate for a Technical Assistant post can be up to 36 years old, and an SC or ST candidate up to 38 — but nobody can be above 56 after every relaxation is added.
Who Should Apply
- This is a contract job, not a permanent one. You work for 3 years, GSL can extend it by up to 2 more, and it can never run beyond 5 years in total. The job ends by itself at the end of the term, with no notice.
- You need work experience. Most posts ask for 2 years in your line, and many want it in the shipbuilding industry. A fresher with no work experience cannot meet this rule.
- If you already hold a government or PSU job, think twice. GSL gives no pay protection and does not carry over service benefits from your earlier job.
- Expect shift work on posts 2 to 20. GSL can also post you to its Goa yard, the Mumbai office, other units or project sites, on board ships, or anywhere in India or abroad.
- You will face a written test and a skill test. For the trade posts the skill test counts for more, so practical ability matters as much as exam preparation.
Selection Process
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| 1. Written test | Held as a Computer Based Test (CBT) or a Pen and Paper Test (PBT); GSL has not said which. About 25% of the questions test general aptitude and 75% test your subject or trade. It counts for 50% of the final score for posts 1–3, 40% for posts 4–10 (Technical Assistants and Nurse) and 30% for posts 11–20 (the trades). |
| 2. Document verification | GSL checks your age, qualification, experience and category documents. |
| 3. Skill / Trade test | A practical test of your trade. It counts for 50% of the final score for posts 1–3, 60% for posts 4–10 and 70% for posts 11–20. Internal candidates get extra weightage as per GSL rules. |
| Minimum marks | You need at least 40% in both the written test and the skill test (35% for SC, ST, PwBD and OBC candidates where the post is reserved for their category). |
| Travel cost | Outstation candidates who clear the written test and qualify for the skill test after verification get second sleeper class rail fare by the shortest route, on showing the tickets. SC/ST candidates who appear for the written test also get it. |
In short: the skill test matters more than the written test for most posts, and you must reach the minimum marks in both. For the trade posts, the skill test is 70% of your final score.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Check that you are eligible before you pay. The Rs 200 fee is not refunded, and fees paid by ineligible candidates are forfeited.
- Apply separately for each post. One form does not cover two posts.
- Do not apply for Technical Assistant with only a B.E. or B.Tech. GSL will not consider you without a diploma.
- Declare all your experience, from your first job to 30.09.2026. If GSL finds false or made-up details, it can reject you, or end your job even after selection.
- If you do not get a fee receipt, your payment failed. Log in again and repeat the payment, and never press back or refresh during payment.
- Check every detail before submitting, since you cannot edit the form afterwards. Call letters go only by email to the ID you registered, so check that inbox often.
