Eligibility Criteria
| Criterion | Detail |
|---|---|
| Educational Qualification | Ph.D. in the relevant or equivalent discipline, with first class in the earlier degrees |
| What counts as first class | 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA, if the university does not define it |
| Grade-I Experience | 3 years after Ph.D., or 6 years of total teaching and research in a reputed institute, R and D lab or industry |
| Grade-I Credit Points | At least 20 cumulative essential credit points |
| Grade-II Experience | Nil. A Ph.D. is enough. |
| Age Limit | No fixed limit stated. Fresh appointment beyond 60 years is discouraged. |
| Age Relaxation | As per Government of India norms, where applicable |
| Nationality | Indian nationals, including PIOs (Persons of Indian Origin) and OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India) |
| Eligibility Date | Counted as on the last date of online application, 28.11.2026 |
| Application Restriction | One post and one department per form. Apply separately, with a separate fee, for each. |
| IIIT Pune Ph.D. holders | Not considered unless they have 3 years of outside experience after the Ph.D. |
In short, every applicant needs a Ph.D. Grade-II asks for no experience, so it suits fresh Ph.D. holders. Grade-I needs about three years after the Ph.D. plus 20 credit points, a scoring system that gives points for research projects, patents, papers, students guided and similar work.
Who Should Apply
- If you want a permanent-track job, look at Grade-I. It starts with one year of probation (a trial period), after which you are confirmed if your work is satisfactory.
- Grade-II is a contract job. You sign a one-year contract that is renewed each year on performance, for a maximum of 5 years.
- Meeting the minimum is not enough. The Institute shortlists on higher norms, such as experience at top-ranked institutes and papers in recognised journals, so a thin research record may not get a call.
- You will need to travel to the Talegaon campus for every stage. The notice says no travel allowance is paid for the written test or interview.
- Looking for a non-teaching job at the same institute? See our post on IIIT Pune non-teaching recruitment (8 posts).
Selection Process
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| Screening | A committee checks applications and shortlists using norms higher than the minimum. |
| Shortlisting: Grade-I | 3+ years of teaching or research after Ph.D. at IITs, IISc, NITs, IIITs, INIs, NIRF top-100 or QS top-500 institutes, or reputed industry. |
| Shortlisting: Grade-II | At least one degree from IITs, IISc, NITs, IIITs, INIs, NIRF top-100 or QS top-500 institutes. |
| Also counted | Quality papers in SCI, SCIE, SSCI or Scopus journals. Paid journals are not counted. |
| Ranking terms | NIRF is India’s official ranking of institutes. QS is a world university ranking. |
| Document check | Shortlisted candidates bring originals, two sets of self-attested copies and a signed PDF of the online form. |
| Stage I: Written test | Offline MCQ test at IIIT Pune. 1/4 negative marking may apply. Marks and duration are not stated. |
| Written test cut-off | SC, ST and PwD: 35%. All other categories: 40%. The test is qualifying only. |
| Stage II: Presentation and interview | Before a Selection Committee, on your research work, future plans and teaching. |
| Final selection | Based entirely on the presentation-cum-interview, after approval of the competent authority. |
In short, the written test only decides who gets to the interview, and the interview alone decides who is selected.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not stop after the online form. The printed set must reach the Institute by 09.12.2026 (5:30 PM), and eligibility is decided only from that hard copy.
- Do not apply to two departments in one form. The notice says such a form is rejected, so file a separate form and fee for each.
- Do not expect to fix errors later. A submitted online form cannot be changed or resubmitted, so keep every detail ready first.
- Do not send extra documents after the hard-copy deadline. The notice says none will be accepted.
- If you work in a government body, PSU or university, keep your NOC and vigilance clearance ready. Without them you will not be allowed to appear for the interview.
- Check iiitp.ac.in regularly. Shortlists and schedules are posted only on the website, with no individual messages.
