Selection Process
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| Stage 1 — Shortlisting | Candidates are shortlisted for the Personal Interview in the ratio of 1:5, that is 5 candidates for each advertised vacancy. Where there is a single vacancy, 10 candidates are shortlisted. Marks for shortlisting: 1 mark for each completed year of relevant experience beyond the minimum requirement (and 1/365 mark for each additional day of an incomplete year), plus 1 mark for every additional degree above the minimum essential qualification in the same discipline, subject to a maximum of 2 marks. HCL may insert additional criteria if required. |
| Stage 2 — Written Screening Test (only if held) | HCL reserves the right to conduct a written screening test to shortlist candidates for the Personal Interview, as per requirement. This is not a confirmed stage — the notification lists it as an option HCL may exercise. |
| Stage 3 — Personal Interview | The selection is made purely on performance in the Personal Interview, which carries 100 percent weightage. Intimation is sent by e-mail and a call letter is issued to shortlisted candidates. Once the date, time and venue are communicated, no request for a change will be entertained. If fewer than five applications are received for a post, the Selection Committee assesses and states the suitability of the candidates interviewed. |
| Stage 4 — Document Verification | Held at the interview venue. Original documents must be produced along with self-attested copies and a signed hard copy of the online application. Non-production of originals will debar a candidate from appearing for the interview. One original photo ID (Aadhaar, Driving Licence or Voter ID) is compulsory. |
| Stage 5 — Medical Fitness | Appointment is subject to the candidate being found medically fit by the medical authority prescribed by HCL management. |
| Further shortlisting | Additional shortlisting may be carried out from the eligible pool for posts that remain vacant because of a low turnout of shortlisted candidates, or if the waitlist panel is exhausted. |

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Counting training, internship, apprenticeship, teaching, fellowship or academic project time as experience — HCL explicitly excludes all of these, and experience runs only from the date your essential qualification result was published.
- Uploading only one salary document per employment; the notification requires a minimum of any two of appointment letter, pay slip, Form-16, PF statement or bank statement, and failure to upload them leads to cancellation of candidature.
- Applying for a grade whose minimum current or last monthly gross salary you do not meet — this is a hard eligibility bar of ₹40,000 to ₹90,000 depending on grade, not a preference.
- Rounding off your percentage of marks in the qualification table instead of entering the exact figure.
- Entering a wrong or inactive e-mail ID or mobile number — the e-mail ID cannot be changed once submitted, and all interview correspondence goes only by e-mail.
- Assuming OBC status alone gives relaxation — Creamy Layer OBC candidates get no relaxation or concession, and the Non-Creamy Layer certificate must be issued on or after 01.04.2026.
- Posting a hard copy of the application or paying the fee by any route other than the payment gateway or NEFT on HCL’s own website — neither is accepted, and the fee is non-refundable.
