Eligibility Criteria

CriterionDetail
Educational QualificationYou need a Master’s degree with at least 50% marks from a university or institute recognised by law or by the government. You also need a B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) or B.P.Ed (Bachelor of Physical Education) degree from a course recognised by the NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education).
ExperienceYou need 4 years as a Lecturer or Assistant Teacher in classes 9 to 12 of an institution recognised by the Central or State government. Four years as a Headmaster of a junior high school also qualifies. The experience certificate must come from the competent authority: a district-level officer, countersigned by the divisional-level officer. For Kendriya Vidyalayas it comes from the Regional Officer.
Age Limit30 to 62 years as on 01.07.2026. Your age counts from the date of birth on your High School (class 10) or equal certificate, and nothing else.
Check your age eligibility →
Age RelaxationNot specified in notification
Boys’ and Girls’ SchoolsMen can apply only for boys’ schools. Women can apply for both, but you must pick one (boys’ or girls’) in the form.
Other ConditionsA person with more than one living spouse, or married to someone who already has a living spouse, is not eligible unless the Governor has allowed it. You must say clearly whether any court case is pending against you or whether a court has punished you. You must be mentally and physically fit for the job, and before final selection the Commission asks for a health certificate from a government doctor. If you are in a job, you need a no objection certificate from your employer.

In short, the experience rule stops most people, and the minimum age is 30. A fresh Master’s and B.Ed graduate cannot apply yet.

Not sure whether you are within the age limit?
Enter your date of birth and the 01.07.2026 cut-off date to see at once whether you fall inside the 30 to 62 year band.

Who Should Apply

  • UPESSC released the Principal posts for aided inter colleges (Advertisement No. 08/2026) the same day. That is a separate recruitment with a higher pay level, so read the UPESSC Principal post too if you have the experience for both.
  • Half of these posts are older requests. 586 of the 1,172 come from 2019–20 and 2021–22 and are included under a High Court order, while the other 586 are 2026 requests. The notification says the number of posts can go up or down.
  • The written exam carries 360 of the 400 marks and the interview only 40, so the exam does most of the work.
  • You choose only boys’ or girls’ schools in the form, not a particular school. The notification says the Director of Secondary Education, Prayagraj, takes school preferences and allots the school afterwards.
  • If you cannot show 4 full years of teaching or headmaster experience on a proper certificate, this post is not for you yet. If you are working now, get the no objection certificate from your employer ready for the interview.

Selection Process

StageDetails
Stage 1: Written exam120 multiple-choice questions, 360 marks, 2 hours. You get 3 marks for each right answer and lose 1 mark for each wrong or multiple answer. The paper is in Hindi and English, except for the language questions. You mark answers on an OMR sheet (a machine-read answer sheet) with a black ball pen. The syllabus is on the Commission’s website, and the cut-off and marks are shown there after the selection is finished. Exam date: 07.01.2027.
Exam centreCentres are set at district headquarters. Any centre can be given to you, and it cannot be changed. If you write the exam at any other centre, your answer sheet is not checked and your candidature is cancelled.
Stage 2: Interview40 marks. Candidates are shortlisted on written exam marks, and the number to be shortlisted is not given in the notification. The Commission gives at least 10 days’ notice by SMS, email and its website. You must bring two sets of self-attested copies of your documents along with the originals, and sign the affidavit (Appendix-3). No travel allowance is paid.
Final merit listOut of 400 marks (360 written + 40 interview). If marks tie, the Commission looks first at written marks, then interview marks, then the higher Master’s percentage, then B.Ed or B.P.Ed marks, and last the older candidate gets the higher rank.
School allotmentAfter selection, the Director of Secondary Education, Prayagraj, takes your school preferences and allots the school.

In short, the written exam comes first and only shortlisted candidates reach the interview. Your final rank is out of 400 and uses both.

  1. Open apply.upessc.org and create your One Time Registration (OTR) if you have not done so. OTR is a one-time profile on the Commission’s portal, and you cannot apply without it. The Commission’s website has a user manual and tutorial videos in Hindi and English.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not leave the fee for the last day. Your payment counts only after the bank confirms it, and without that your application is not valid.
  • Check your date of birth before you submit. Only the date on your High School certificate is accepted, and it cannot be changed after you submit.
  • Upload a clear photo and a real signature in the sizes given. The Commission rejects the application if they are missing.
  • Fill in the form in English only, and submit it once. If you submit more than one form, only the last one counts.
  • Do not apply for girls’ schools if you are a man, and do not mix up the boys’ and girls’ options if you are a woman.
  • Do not apply without 4 years of experience on a proper certificate. A person found to have hidden or wrongly filled in any detail can be removed from the selection and kept out of future Commission exams.
