Eligibility Criteria
| Criterion | Detail |
|---|---|
| Junior Hindi Translator: Education | A Master’s degree from a recognised university in which Hindi and English both feature at degree level. The notice allows five mixes: Hindi with English; English with Hindi (each as a compulsory or elective subject, or as the medium of examination); or any other subject where one of the two languages is the medium and the other is a compulsory or elective subject (or both are subjects). |
| Junior Hindi Translator: Translation skill | A recognised diploma or certificate course in Hindi to English and English to Hindi translation, or two years of such translation work in a Central or State Government office, including a Government of India undertaking. |
| Junior Hindi Translator: Language | You must have studied one 8th Schedule language other than Hindi at Class 10 level from a recognised board. The 8th Schedule is the Constitution’s official list of Indian languages. |
| Legal Assistant: Education | A professional law degree from a recognised university. |
| Legal Assistant: Experience | At least 3 years of handling court cases in a government or semi-government organisation, and/or practice before a High Court or a lower court in civil or labour matters. |
| Legal Assistant: Good to have | A postgraduate degree, a diploma in IPR (intellectual property rights) or labour laws, good drafting and noting skills, knowledge of service rules for Central Government staff, and hands-on computer experience. These are desirable, not compulsory. |
| Legal Assistant: Work and rule | You would assist the Assistant Registrar or Deputy Registrar (Legal) with writ petitions, replies to them, contracts and MoUs on academic matters, and work with standing counsel and panel advocates in the Delhi High Court and lower courts. Private practice is not allowed. |
| Age Limit | 35 years for Junior Hindi Translator and 40 years for Legal Assistant, counted as on the closing date. Check your age eligibility → |
| Category Rule | If you belong to a reserved category but apply as General, you lose the age and cut-off relaxations. |
| Category | Relaxation |
|---|---|
| SC, ST, OBC (Central List), PwD, Ex-Servicemen and other specified categories | As per Central Government orders. The notice gives no year count. |
| At least 3 years of regular service in the same or an allied field in a Government department, statutory or autonomous body, university, college under DU, or PSU | Up to 5 years, or the completed years of service if fewer |
| Departmental candidates of the University or its colleges | No upper age limit |
| Contract, daily-wage or ad hoc staff appointed directly by DU or its colleges, with at least 1 year of service | One-time exemption. Project-based and outsourced staff are not covered. |
| Minimum marks, where a percentage is prescribed for the degree | A further 5% relaxation for SC, ST, OBC (NCL) and PwBD |
So a 38-year-old with 5 years of regular government service in the same field is still eligible for Junior Hindi Translator: the 5-year relaxation takes the limit from 35 up to 40. For Legal Assistant, the same person is already inside the limit of 40.
Who Should Apply
- All three posts are Unreserved (open to everyone), and the notice lists no seats for SC, ST, OBC or EWS. It also says a reserved-category candidate who is eligible only because of age relaxation is considered only for seats reserved for their own category. Read that rule before you pay the fee.
- Check the experience rule first. Junior Hindi Translator needs a translation diploma or certificate, or two years of translation work. Legal Assistant needs three years of court work, so a fresh law graduate does not qualify.
- Junior Hindi Translator has one condition that is easy to miss: you must have studied an 8th Schedule language other than Hindi (for example Tamil, Bengali or Urdu) up to Class 10.
- Expect exams, not an interview. Both posts go through an MCQ test, a descriptive Main exam and a Skill Test, and the scheme lists no interview.
- If you already work at DU or its colleges on contract, daily-wage or ad hoc terms, you may get bonus marks and a one-time age exemption. The marks rule covers staff working there as on 25.03.2021.
Selection Process
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| Stage 1: Preliminary test (shortlisting) | An MCQ (multiple-choice) test with 100 questions, 200 marks and 2 hours. Each question carries 2 marks, and each wrong answer costs 0.5 marks. It is only for shortlisting and has no weightage in the final result. For Junior Hindi Translator the notice adds that this test is skipped if there are fewer than 30 applicants for each vacant post. |
| Prelim subjects: Junior Hindi Translator | 25 questions each on Hindi language, English language, Translation, and the Rajbhasha Adhiniyam, 1963 and related rules (the Official Languages Act and its rules). |
| Prelim subjects: Legal Assistant | 25 questions each on General Knowledge, Reasoning, General Mathematical Ability, and Administration of Higher Educational Institutions. |
| Cut-off and shortlist | The cut-off is 50% of the average score of the top 5% of test takers (if the top 5% is fewer than 2 people, the average of the top 2 scores). SC and ST get a 5% relaxation and PwBD gets 10%. For one post, 30 applicants go to the Main exam, plus 15 more for each extra post. That means 45 for Junior Hindi Translator and 30 for Legal Assistant. Anyone tied at the cut-off marks is also shortlisted. |
| Stage 2: Main exam | A descriptive exam (you write your own answers) of 200 marks and 2 hours. Junior Hindi Translator: basic knowledge of educational administration and management, Hindi and English language, Rajbhasha Adhiniyam, and translation. Legal Assistant: the Constitution of India and how it applies, how higher educational institutions and their nodal agencies work, service rules and student admission and evaluation procedures, and legal knowledge. The final merit list comes from this exam. |
| Stage 2: Skill Test | 100 marks, qualifying only, and you need 50 marks to pass. Junior Hindi Translator: translation, typing in Hindi and English, and dictation in Hindi and English. Legal Assistant: skills in legal aptitude and method. The time is set by the evaluating experts. Only candidates who sit the Main exam can take it. |
| Merit list | DU draws merit only for shortlisted candidates who appeared in both the Main exam and the Skill Test. |
| Language and extra time | Question papers are in English and Hindi, and you can answer in either one but must use the same language throughout. Candidates with visual impairment, cerebral palsy or similar PwBD cases get 20 extra minutes for every hour. |
| Bonus marks | Contract, ad hoc or temporary employees of DU or its colleges (as on 25.03.2021) get 1 mark for each year of service, up to 10. It is added in the preliminary test (if held) and to the Main exam score for the final merit list. |
In short: the first MCQ test only picks who gets to write the Main exam, and its marks are not carried forward. Your rank comes from the Main exam alone. The Skill Test is pass or fail, and you need 50 out of 100.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- If you are from a reserved category, do not apply as General. The notice says you then lose the age and cut-off relaxations.
- Check the date on your OBC (NCL) or EWS certificate. Both must be issued on or after 01.04.2026, so an older certificate will not work.
- If you work in a Government department or PSU, keep your NOC ready. Without it, DU can cancel your candidature.
- Do not ask anyone to put in a word for you. The notice says canvassing in any form disqualifies you.
- Do not leave the fee for the last day. It cannot be refunded, and DU accepts applications only provisionally.
- Watch du.ac.in for corrections. DU says any addendum or corrigendum is posted only on its website.
