Who Should Apply

  • A Journeyman post is a 2-year training job on a fixed stipend, not a regular pay scale from day one. You may move to the regular scale after training, but GRSE does not promise it.
  • You cannot choose your posting. GRSE can send you to any of its units or projects, including the newer Raichak and Timber Pond units.
  • The written test is held only at Kolkata and Ranchi, and no travel allowance is paid for it.
  • Drivers need 6 years of driving experience and a clean record for the last 6 years. Look at your experience certificate before you apply, because it must show your joining and relieving dates.
  • If you have an engineering degree, an MBA or a similar higher qualification, do not apply. It makes you ineligible for every post.

Selection Process

StageDetails
1. Shortlisting (only if applications are many)Journeyman: by marks in the qualifying trade exam (AITT, the All India Trade Test). Driver: by the type and years of relevant experience, at GRSE’s choice
2. Written Test100 multiple-choice questions, 100 marks, 2 hours, on an OMR sheet. Part I is the trade paper (80 marks). Part II covers general knowledge, aptitude, reasoning, mental ability and numerical ability (20 marks). Passing marks: Journeyman 50% (45% for SC, ST and OBC, 40% for PwBD). Driver 40% (35% for OBC, 30% for PwBD)
3. Document VerificationHeld before the practical test. You must bring the originals, and only those who clear this stage can sit the practical test
4. Practical (Trade) Test50 marks, pass-only at 50% (45% for SC, ST and OBC, 40% for PwBD). GRSE calls 5 candidates per vacancy, in order of written test merit
5. Physical Efficiency Test (PET)A fitness test you only have to pass. It applies to Driver (Material Handling), Rigger and Crane Operator only, and not to ex-Agniveers
6. Final Merit ListMade from written test marks, among those who clear the practical test
7. Medical and Police ClearanceA pre-employment medical test. You can join only after a clear Police Clearance Certificate

In short: your written test marks decide your rank. The practical test and the PET are pass-or-fail, so their marks do not add to your final merit.
