Selection Process
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| 1. Screening of Applications | A Screening Committee sorts every online application into “Eligible” and “Not Eligible” purely on the basis of the information the candidate entered on the portal. Where the number of applications is large, MECL may fix an additional cut-off based on essential qualification, relevant post-qualification and work experience. Nothing is verified from documents at this stage. |
| 2. Written Competitive Examination (Weightage: 100%) | Conducted at Nagpur only, by an independent external agency notified as a Public Examination Authority under the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. The written test carries the entire 100% weightage — the final merit list is drawn on these marks alone. Cut-off marks: 50% for UR, OBC-NCL and EWS; 45% for SC and ST; relaxed standard for PwD as per Government guidelines. Per MECL’s “Important Instructions for Online Examination”: the test duration is 02 hours (candidates should expect to be at the venue about 4 hours), there is a penalty for wrong answers, scores across sessions are equated for difficulty, and cut-offs are applied in two stages — on individual tests and on the total score. The detailed test structure and syllabus have not been published yet. |
| 3. Document Verification | Candidates clearing the written test are called in order of merit, ordinarily in a ratio of up to 1:7 — that is, up to 7 candidates for every advertised vacancy. If fewer candidates clear than that ratio allows, all of them are called. Original documents are checked against the details entered in the online application; any deviation leads to rejection. |
| 4. Skill Test / Trade Test (Qualifying only) | Conducted by an internal committee, which marks each candidate “Suitable” or “Not Suitable”. It carries no marks towards merit. After the “Not Suitable” candidates are removed, the Final Merit List is drawn purely on the written test marks already obtained. Ties are decided by the Committee Chairman, with reasons recorded. |
| 5. Medical Fitness | Appointment is subject to being declared medically fit by a Government Medical Officer or the CMO of a Government Hospital. For Junior Driver, Mechanic, Mechanic-cum-Operator (Drilling), Machinist, Technician (Drilling) and Electrician, absence of colour blindness and night blindness is mandatory. The medical examination fee is reimbursed by MECL on production of the receipt. |
| 6. Probation | One year from the date of joining, extendable by up to one more year. Confirmation is not automatic and requires a written order. |
No travelling allowance is paid for the written test, document verification, skill test or trade test.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying for more than one post — the notification allows one candidate to apply for only one post, so choose carefully before you pay.
- Leaving the “Nature of Duties” field short or vague — shortlisting is done on exactly this text, and it is later checked against your employer’s documents at verification.
- Picking the wrong category at registration — SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, PwD and Ex-SM cannot be changed at any later stage of the process.
- Bringing an OBC-NCL certificate issued before 01.04.2026 — it must be issued in the current financial year, along with the non-creamy-layer declaration.
- Counting course-curriculum training or internship as experience — it does not count, though a one-year apprenticeship completed after ITI with a National Apprenticeship Certificate does.
- Waiting until 11.10.2026 to apply — MECL states plainly that it takes no responsibility for applications that fail to go through because of last-day server load.
- Paying money to anyone who promises a job at MECL — the company has issued a public notice warning about fake recruitment advertisements and agents.
